Basilica of Guadalupe

The national Basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe is a shrine of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to the Virgin Mary as she appeared at Guadalupe, located at the foot of the Hill of Tepeyac.

It is considered the center of the Catholic faith in America and one of the most visited Catholic sites in the world. Every year some twenty million pilgrims visit the shrine, of which about nine million do so in the days close to December twelfth, the day on which the Virgin Mary of Guadalupe is celebrated. The Basilica reflects the miracle that occurred in Guadalupe almost 500 years ago to a native of Mexico called Juan Diego when he had a vision of the Virgin Mary and her image miraculously appeared on his cloak.
